Norfolk officer sues over trans recruit's locker room presence

A Virginia officer claims trauma after a trans recruit used the women's locker room.

A Norfolk police officer has filed a lawsuit against the city and Police Chief Mark Talbot, alleging that her complaints about a transgender recruit's behavior were ignored. Meghan Grabow claims that in 2024, while changing in the women's locker room, she felt uncomfortable as the recruit, who she misgenders in court documents, allegedly stared at her. She described the gaze as one that a man might give a woman.

Grabow reported the incident to two captains, one of whom suggested she find an alternative locker room, while the other advised her to take her gun into the shower for safety. Her lawsuit criticizes the department for fostering a "sexually harassing, intimidating, and traumatic" environment, citing a meeting where concerns about the trans recruit were not taken seriously.

Grabow's lawsuit seeks $15 million in damages, claiming her expectations of privacy were severely violated. She alleges that officers who expressed concerns were reminded of their job security, while another officer, Martin Powers, is also suing for $5 million after facing retaliation for supporting Grabow's claims. The case highlights ongoing tensions within law enforcement regarding inclusion and respect for transgender identities.
