The league steps in after fans face censorship over trans messages.

At a recent WNBA game between the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever, security took an unexpected turn by asking at least three fans to cover their shirts featuring messages about transgender participation in sports. Among these shirts was one expressing support for trans rights, while others called for restrictions on women's and girls' sports based on sex.

The league responded swiftly to this misstep, stating, "The WNBA is aware of interactions at (Sunday) night’s game in Atlanta in which fans were asked by league security to cover their shirts. This should not have happened." They have since informed the security staff that their actions were unwarranted.

The Atlanta Dream also distanced itself from the incident, asserting that their personnel were not involved in the security decisions and emphasizing their commitment to an inclusive environment. This controversy unfolds amidst broader discussions about transgender participation in women's sports, especially following remarks by WNBA player Sophie Cunningham expressing opposition to trans women competing in women's leagues.

The WNBA has historically embraced a strong LGBTQ+ fanbase and player activism, making this incident particularly noteworthy as it reflects ongoing tensions within sports regarding gender identity.
