Madison de Rozario, a two-time winner of the Sydney Marathon, is back to tackle what she calls the hardest course on the circuit. After missing last year's event as it earned World Major status, de Rozario is eager to race through familiar Sydney streets, including Oxford Street, where her experiences range far beyond marathon racing.
This weekend, she faces a 42-kilometre route from North Sydney to the iconic Opera House, which is notorious for its hilly terrain. "I dread it. Of all the majors, it’s the hilliest. I find it the most difficult," she remarked, highlighting the challenges that await her.
De Rozario’s emotional connection to the race is deepened by her victories in 2024 and her experiences at the Paris Paralympics, where she won silver and bronze medals. "That was one of the most emotional roller coasters of my life," she reflected, recalling her father's passing shortly after carrying the Australian flag during the opening ceremony.
In addition to de Rozario, the race features legendary American wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden, a nine-time Paralympic champion and a prominent figure in the marathon world. McFadden, who has overcome significant health challenges, is also excited to take on the daunting Sydney course, stating, "I like challenging things."
As both athletes prepare to race, the event promises not only to showcase incredible physical feats but also to highlight the growing recognition and elevation of Para athletes in major sporting events. The Sydney Marathon is set to be a thrilling spectacle as these champions push themselves to the limit on home soil.
