Republicans resort to anti-trans tactics as elections loom

Facing electoral challenges, GOP turns to tried-and-true anti-trans measures for distraction.

With the 2026 elections fast approaching, Republicans are facing a potential disaster. Donald Trump’s unpopularity looms large, and party insiders are scrambling to find distractions. Enter the age-old tactic: anti-trans rhetoric. In four states—Washington, Arizona, Missouri, and Colorado—Republicans are pushing anti-trans ballot measures aimed at prohibiting trans athletes from participating in sports and banning healthcare for trans youth.

This strategy reflects a desperate attempt to energize their base, but it’s an uphill battle. Polls show that voters are primarily concerned about the economy, with inflation at the forefront. A recent survey found that 0% of respondents considered trans issues a top concern, while 56% believed Democrats would manage these issues better than Republicans.

History suggests this tactic might not yield the desired voter turnout. Just last year, Virginia’s Winsome Earle-Sears made trans rights a central part of her campaign and lost by over 14 percentage points. If Republicans think targeting trans individuals can distract from Trump’s baggage, they may be in for a rude awakening. As voters face significant challenges, it seems the GOP's old tricks might not work this time around.
