Burnie's first freestanding LGBTIQA+ Action Plan is a watershed moment for Tasmania's northwest, aiming to reshape the region's social fabric. The Council's collaboration with its LGBTIQA+ Community Advisory Group reflects a genuine effort to listen and act on community feedback.

Deputy Mayor Giovanna Simpson highlighted the stark reality many LGBTIQA+ residents face, with over half of survey participants not viewing Burnie as a welcoming space. Alarmingly, 60% reported holding back on activities due to fear of discrimination or violence.

The Action Plan focuses on three key areas: ensuring a safe and respectful environment, fostering a sense of belonging, and embedding LGBTIQA+ inclusion in Council operations. Maxxy Prior from the Advisory Group emphasized that inclusion transcends policies; it must permeate daily experiences, allowing LGBTIQA+ individuals to navigate their lives free from fear.

While the endorsement of this Plan marks a significant milestone for Burnie, the real work begins now. The Council is committed to transforming these plans into tangible actions, working hand-in-hand with the community to cultivate an inclusive atmosphere for all residents.
