The QLD Camping Bears have kicked off a fundraiser in support of Wear It Purple Day, scheduled for August 28. This grassroots initiative, led by Henry Stapleton, the inaugural QLD Camping Bear of the Year, seeks to rally the Queensland community around the urgent need for safety and visibility for LGBTQIA+ youth.
Wear It Purple Day has been a vital movement since its inception in 2010, born from the tragic rates of LGBTQIA+ youth suicide. The message, 'You are loved, you are valued, and you are not alone,' is more relevant than ever as queer youth continue to face bullying and discrimination.
This year’s theme, Colours of Courage, encourages young people to embrace their identities confidently. The QLD Camping Bears are committing their 2026 fundraising efforts to this cause, reflecting a belief that protecting young people must remain central to queer advocacy.
Stapleton, who has taken on an ambassador role, emphasizes the importance of visibility: "Wear It Purple is important to me because it’s the kind of representation and support I needed when I was growing up." His experiences in outdoor spaces shaped his understanding of belonging, aligning perfectly with Wear It Purple’s mission.
At the heart of the fundraiser is the limited-edition Bisexual "H" patch, designed by Stapleton. All profits from the merchandise, including tees and caps, will be donated to Wear It Purple until December 1, 2026, allowing supporters to contribute to youth safety initiatives while expressing pride.
In a political climate where LGBTQIA+ youth are often used as pawns in public debates, community-driven efforts like this fundraiser are critical. Every donation, purchase, or shared message amplifies the call for a world where all young people can thrive without fear. The QLD Camping Bears hope to not only raise funds but also spread awareness of Wear It Purple’s empowering message, reminding every LGBTQIA+ young person that they deserve joy, safety, and community.
