Victorian Pride Centre drops full Midsumma lineup — rooftop parties, abseiling, and all

St Kilda's queer HQ is running everything from launch parties to Pride March recovery, and it's built to be your festival base.

The Victorian Pride Centre has dropped its Midsumma lineup, and if you've been wondering what St Kilda's queer HQ does when the festival rolls around, here's your answer: everything.

From January through February, the Centre is running a full program of parties, workshops, performances and social events. The Y Series Pop-Up Bar opens for the season, serving festival drinks. The whole thing kicks off with the Midsumma Program Launch Party — dancing, drinks, and a first look at what's on.

January's the packed month. Queer history sessions at AQuA. The TiPS Speakers Showcase. Queer filmmaking workshops. Theatre. Abseiling off the Centre itself, which is the kind of thing you either immediately want to do or immediately want to watch someone else do. Lesbirun takeovers. The Chemist Warehouse Rooftop Party. Bookish events from Hares & Hyenas.

And then Pride March Day, which is where the Centre's built-for-this design actually shows up.

They're calling it the Rainbow Recharge Hub. The setup: watch the march livestream with JOY Media, sit in the air-conditioned Theatrette when you need to, then head up to the rooftop afterparty when you're ready. DJs. Sunday Sizzle. The thing a rooftop party does well — giving you somewhere to be that isn't the street or your couch.

That's the mechanism. A venue goes from useful to essential when it solves the specific problem of the day it's built for, and Pride March Day's problem is always the same: you want to be part of it, you don't want to stand in the sun for six hours, and you need somewhere to land afterwards that isn't trying to flip the room for dinner service.
